KPMG gets new auditing partner

FIVE questions

Stanislav Bernard

Job title: Co-owner, GM Bernard Family Brewery

Age: 45

Previous jobs: One-time deputy chairman for economics in the Opava regional government office.

Education: Transportation University (VSDS) in Zilina, Slovakia.

Let's start with your favorite beverage.
Good beer. I like Bavarian. But there's also good tea and mineral water.

Why the brewery?
I wanted to become independent after the revolution. I didn't want to be someone's employee any more. Buying the brewery in 1991 was a way of reaching that goal.

Are national consumers price- or taste-oriented?
Both. You can buy sour beer for 30 Kc. That doesn't mean all European Union beers are sour.

How will joining the EU affect the domestic beer market?
Not at all. Foreign beer is being imported now, but it plays no role because it costs more.

Prime Minister Milos Zeman has made some funny beer remarks ...
About the quality of Slovak beer, yes. But the prime minister is a passionate Becherovka man.

Will Vladimir Zelezny go to jail?
He's under investigation. Let's not be premature ...

KPMG's auditing department has a new chief partner, Andrew Sutherland. The chartered accountant from the United Kingdom, who started his career with KPMG in Frankfurt in 1980, replaced Frantisek Dostalek, who became managing partner of KPMG's Prague office at the beginning of this month.

Sutherland has traveled around Europe with KPMG. After Frankfurt, he moved to the company's UK office for a 12-year stint starting in 1984. He came to the Prague office in 1996. He specializes in auditing, accounting and due diligence. He has experience with British, French, Swiss, German and Japanese clients in the automotive, communication, entertainment and consumer products industries.

Sutherland is fluent in German and French, and in his free time enjoys mountain biking and all kinds of music, from Baroque choral to blues. He is married with one son.

KPMG is one of the leading international advisory firms, and its presence was established here in 1990. Within 10 years, it has grown to a staff of 500 with offices in four cities: Prague, Brno, Ceske Budejovice and Jablonec nad Nisou.

Ernst & Young has brought Ivo Streda on board as head of internal auditing. He will be responsible for overseeing internal audits for E&Y clients, as well as co-sourcing, a method of increasing efficiency by letting a client's internal auditing department split duties and work closely with the same office in E&Y.

Streda comes to Ernst & Young from Cesky Telecom, where he was executive director of a similar division. Before that, he spent many years in the energy industry, working at nuclear power stations in Jaslovske Bohunice, Dukovany and at Temelin, where he was a deputy human resources director.

Streda is a graduate of the Technical University (CVUT) in Prague, and has ties to several industry associations. He is a co-founder and member of the Czech Institute of Internal Auditors, as well as a board member of the Union of Industry and Transportation of the Czech Republic. He also holds a spot with the U.S.-based Institute of Internal Auditors.

Streda spends his leisure time with his family, which includes a Yorkshire terrier.

Lenka Smejkalova has moved from Dynamic Relations PR agency to AMI Communications. In her new firm, Smejkalova will be an account manager for Wustenrot building society's clients and the Online Investor brokerage company.

AMI Communications has also hired Milan Vacik as a new project manager. He will work on developing projects for Arthur Andersen and Epravo.cz, an Internet company.
