Dragon boats race to raise money charity in an event sponsored by the Rotary Club.
One of the more colorful charitable events is the Rotary Dragon Boat Charity Challenge, which takes place Sept. 14. This year it will have a slightly different location, Smíchovská pláž, the beach area in Prague 5-Smíchov.
The fourth annual edition of the event places a number of uniquely decorated boats on the Vltava River for a race. Approximately 30 teams are expected to participate this year. Václav Chalupa, a Czech Olympic rowing medallist in single sculls, will be a member of a Rotary club team.
The event will also include activities for kids with jugglers, body-painters, a science demonstration and the chance to go on a dragon boat. Live music and theater will also be on the schedule.
Last year the event raised 550,000 Kč, and the goal is higher this year. One recipient of the funds was an organization called Život 90, which will also benefit this year. The money is raised from the teams, but the public is also welcome to support the event.
When: Sept. 14
Where: Smíchovská pláž, Prague 5
"We are very grateful to Rotary Club Prague International not only for inviting us again to participate but for the opportunity to secure a valuable donation for our organization. The funds received last year we used for our project aimed at the prevention of violent attacks on the elderly. We need finance for communicating about this problem but also for establishing a toll-free help line called 'Senior telefon' for very elderly people in need," Jan Lorman, director of Life 90, said in a press release. Another recipient is Nadace Naše dítě, which helps children in difficult life situations.
Rotary International is a service organization founded in 1905, bringing together business and community leaders and leading professionals. More than 1.3 million members are organized in 38.000 clubs around the world.
Rotary is internationally organized in districts. District 2240 covers both Czech and Slovak republics and consists of 47 Czech and Moravian and 25 Slovak Rotary Clubs with total number of more than 1.400 members.
The Rotary Dragon Boat Charity Challenge will be held under the patronage of Miroslav Zelený, Mayor of Prague 5 and Irena Brichta, Governor of Rotary District 2240. The event was originally scheduled for June, but was postponed due to the floods.
