Letters to the Editor Bud vs. Bud To the Editor: Just a note of congrats in connection with John Poston's "Bud vs. Bud" article [Feb. 9-15]. As a onetime chief of Czech diplomatic protocol, I once took the Swedish king through the Budvar brewery, and as a connoisseur of fine beer I am definitely a Budvar fan as opposed to Budweiser's watery ambiguity. I never quite understood the nature of the dispute until you explained it so well. Write on! Jan Drabek Vancouver, Canada To the Editor: Your article reminds me of a story I heard: Three senior brewery executives -- who met at the conference they were attending -- decide to go out for drinks together. When they arrive at the pub, the executive from Coors Brewery orders a Coors, and the Anheuser-Busch executive orders a Bud. The Budvar executive turns to the bartender and says: "If my friends won't drink beer, I won't either. I'll have water, please." Dave Getson Toronto, Canada To the Editor: It's typical. American Budweiser couldn't hold a candle to the Czech Bud. Therefore, they have to try to remove the competition by removing the competition's name. Grow up, Anheuser-Busch, and be happy that the Czechs don't export a real beer to the U.S. and put you and your slop out of business. Gord Macaulay Calgary, Canada Hail Albright To the Editor: I am a Mexican woman of 23 in love with the Czech Republic and its people. I enjoyed reading your article on Madeleine Albright so much [March 1-7] that I simply couldn't resist getting in touch. Albright is an example in today's modern world that women can be successful and above all caring and intelligent. Thanks a lot and congratulations once again on the article.
